Dear St. Andrew’s Members,
I'm really excited to share with you that St. Andrew's will be welcoming Roy Thomas, our new Associate Pastor, to our ministry staff next week. Roy has been a priest for 16 years in the Mar Thoma Church, a very ancient branch of Christ's Church with roots in India. He has recently transitioned into the Episcopal Church, and will begin the next stage of his ministry here at St. Andrew's. Roy's first Sunday will be this coming Sunday, June 10.
Roy was born in Lubbock and raised in the Metroplex, where he met his wife Rachel (also from the Metroplex) who is a pediatrician in Dallas. They have three children, Isaiah, Faith, and Jeremiah. In addition to his theological studies, Roy has a Masters in Counseling. He is an avid Cowboys fan and lives in Wylie. And of course there's lots more you'll be getting to know about him and his wonderful family in the coming months.
The process of transition as an ordained priest from one branch of Christ's Church to another can get complicated, and in Roy's case it will be a little while before he can serve as an ordained Episcopal priest -- hence the abnormal, for an Episcopal Church, title of "Associate Pastor." You'll notice most of all in that he will not be celebrating the sacraments. He is fully licensed by the bishop to do everything else -- teach, preach, pastoral visitation and counseling. In fact, Bishop Sumner and the diocesan leadership are so excited about Roy and the work he can do here at St. Andrew's that they are funding Roy's salary, making it possible for him to be with us on a half-time basis.
I am deeply thankful for God's provision for St. Andrew's in bringing Roy here, and look forward to his ministry among us. Roy and his family will be at the services on Sunday and I hope you'll join us at worship to welcome him. His first day in the office will be Monday, June 11th.
